Visual Literacy
Visual Literacy is defined in the book as "awareness of the importance of visual communication and your ability to interpret or make meaning out of images by examining their context and visual features". Or, in other words, the ability to look at and interpret and decipher a meaning from an image you are presented with. It is the ability to see something beyond what is shown and think critically about what an image or scene is implying, beyond just what is being shown.
An example of visual literacy is a photo of a young child picking up the ocean and seeing plastic under it. There are many different ways to interpret this photo, maybe they were things the child was trying to hide, or maybe it represents how the ocean hides pollution and trash under the water, or maybe its a reference to Moana and how she can move water. There are different ways to see and interpret any photo and visual literacy allows up the skills to do so. It is very useful and often underappreciated.

Powerful image! Good choice! You mostly deal with meaning, which is useful. VL also want to ask, "How?" How does the image do what it does? Think about how the elements are all arranges, how they relate, who is featured, what colors are used, and the scale of things in frame.
